On our departure day on Tuesday, we had to vacate our Airbnb by 10am. But our flight was not until 1:25 pm. Since we had plenty of time, we decided to spend an entire €1,06 for both of us to get to the airport on public transportation. We took tram 11 just a few steps from the apartment, and five stops later we transferred to Bus 229 to the airport. The total time was just under an hour. We arrived about 20 minutes before the airline check-in desk opened. We decided to check our luggage on the way back, mainly because we had two connections to get home, and it would be no big deal if our bags got delayed.
Our flight home was Zagreb to London, London to JFK, overnight at a hotel near JFK, then JFK to DFW. We have had connections at London Heathrow several times over the years. This is probably the worst airport in the world to change to a connecting flight. Without going into details, let us just say the LHR track record continued intact. But we had time for a quick beverage at the lounge and made it to our gate in time for the next flight. Thanks to a Christmas gift from Meg, my Apple luggage tracker indicated that my bag was on the plane.
We breezed through Global Entry at JFK. We had to wait about 30 minutes for our bags, that we simply picked up, walked through customs and redeposited at the connecting bags station. Then we ordered an Uber to our hotel. Uber at JFK airport is the most organized I have seen at any airport. Once you order the Uber, the app presents a designated parking space to go to (We were E3). The signage to the parking spaces was clear. Our Uber was there waiting for us. Wow was that easy. We did not have to scan all the cars approaching us to try to find our driver.
With jet lag, we woke up around 4am, well before the 5:30am alarm. Our flight was at 8am. We simply headed out early for the airport. We had an excellent breakfast at the lounge. That was the earliest we had ever had Piper Heidsieck champagne (6am?). Our flight to DFW was on time and uneventful. Our Robson Ranch driver met us at baggage claim, and soon we were home. We felt like heading to bed starting around 3pm, but we toughed it out until it got dark at about 7:30pm. Then we gave in.
Tom was up early the next morning and was on the pickleball courts by 6:30am.
